This class will focus on learning about the settling of the Eastern mountains and how people lived there. We will have fun and learn how to do some of the folks crafts that were every day necessities for people who lived in the outposts of Appalachia. We will study a broad range of topics gathered from a variety of sources such as the Foxfire books, sociological studies of the Appalachians and ghost stories. A few examples of topics we may learn about are: The Brown Mountain Lights; moonshining; coal mining; music; dance; ties to the British Isles; haint tales; hard scrabble farming; and more! We may have assigned readings to do at home for this class but this will be decided at a later date.
