We’re picking Wind up from the trainer today. Yesterday Martina rode her pony by herself for the first time and it was a beautiful sight. The young man walking along with them is Shooter (aka Brian Price) who trained the pony.
Wind has been at Breckenridge Manor in Virginia Beach’s Pungo area for 3 months. When we took him to Shooter, Wind had been handled a lot and had a good bit of groundwork, saddling and being sat upon but I wanted someone else to do the part which would take Wind from first ride to trained pony and Shooter was the man for the job. He is small enough to ride ponies and tough enough for the rankest Warmblood. It was really hard to send our pony to ‘boarding school’. He’s 3 years old and is a third generation family member (Travis’ fist pony was his granny and pregnant when he got her from Santa.) Wind had been with our family, on our farm, every day of his life. We missed him terribly but it was SO worth it to see my little girl’s face, happiness and grit yesterday when she climbed up on him and rode him independently for the first time.
Not only is Shooter good with horses, he’s pretty awesome with little girls, too.
