This week our class heard a story about Mr and Mrs Owl. We talked about how owls hunt, when they are active and how they see. I brought in some tp rolls to use in a demonstration of Owl Vision. The children held the rolls up and noted how they lost their peripheral vision. Owls cannot move their eyes, which is why they can move their heads around so freely in order to see (or hear) all around them.
I really wanted to find owl pellets for the kids to pick apart but the idea came toward the end of last week. Alas, I could not find them locally and had to give that idea up, though I may revisit it later in the semester.
We went over the rhyme, The Wise Old Owl before sitting down to work on MLBs and again before class dismissal.
In their MLBs the children each colored a picture of an owl. We are working on crayoning in the Waldorf style using beeswax, block crayons in red, blue and yellow. The children are absolutely amazed in class when they can make brown, purple, green and orange using just those three colors.
Those who were interested in writing copied, ‘The Wise Old Owl,’ into their MLBs. Those who were not interested got extra paper to color on while the scribes got down to business.

Why can’t we all be like that wise old bird?
